Day 40 – S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders (Chicken Edition)

day-40

Ponyboy, Sodapop… the gang’s all here, pecking and scratching their way into your hearts as they enter those difficult teenage years.

Some indication of pecking order is becoming clear now and many of the adult chicken behaviors developing. Most notably right now is the instinct to roost. Consequently, I’m more commonly finding birds sitting on top of the waterer or even on the edge on the pen. In one sad case, one of the barred rocks fell into the nearly empty open top feeder and had to be eventually rescued when she didn’t have the wing room to get out on her own. Plus, the Socs won’t accept them and Johnny ended up stabbing somebody. This hard to be a chicken from the wrong side of the tracks.
