When I didn’t see that little hen after the first day in the yard , I thought maybe something was up.
Thing about adding chickens to the yard? Until they get their bearings they tend to end up sleeping on the ground (as opposed to the 4 to 7 feet up at which the others perch), which leaves them wide open to a wandering predator. Up high, the other birds are more or less safe from the casual attack. While I was surprised to find a raccoon in this trap (as they tend toward leaving the evidence in plain sight), I guess we have the answer to the fate of the last of the new brood. Sigh.
Tune in June 21st for the next hatch. Let’s hope things go better for them.
